It was reported in January 1904 that the Duke of Portland had sought the advice of Willie Fernie of Troon regarding the layout of a nine-hole course on his estate at Welbeck. As well as laying out the course Fernie provided tuition for the Duke.

From the Derbyshire Times Saturday 11 January 1913; "Welbeck Golf Links - The Duke of Portland regrets that owing to the number of players on the links, the course is sometimes very congested, and in future the public are kindly requested Not To Play on Saturday Afternoons - By Order - T Warner Turner, agent."  

The professional at Welbeck at the time of WW1 was Sam Malthouse.
