The following  is an extract from a report that appeared in the Gloucester Journal Saturday 13th March 1909. "Cirncester Golf Club - Proposed New Course - The great excellence of the Sapperton Park course - kindly granted for the use of golf by Earl Bathurst - has always been admitted , but it's unalterable distance from Cirencester has generally militated against the frequency and regularity of its use.

This resulted in the selection of a course within two miles of the town and easily accessible by foot or on wheels. Mr  James Braid has been engaged to lay out the course."

Cirencester Golf Club bases its early history on the Sapperton Park Golf Club.
