Lampeter/Peterwell Golf Club, Lampeter. (1899 - 1970s)
There is evidence of an earlier course at Roman Road near Sorn Helen. Any information on this earlier course would be appreciated, please "Contact Us" via the website homepage.
Originally a nine-hole course, by the 1970s it was an 18-hole course of 4,448yds with a SSS of 71. Membership rose from 50 in the early years to 180 by the mid 1970s. The railway station was 1 mile away. Local hotels were the Black Lion and the Castle.
The following result is from the Cambrian News Friday 30 June 1899. "The monthly contest of the Lampeter Golf Club took place on Saturday when the gold medal was won by Mr J S Jones, Uplands."
The following report is from the Cambrian News Friday 30 November 1900; "The Gilvin Golf Club met on their links on Saturday 24 November and played for the Dr. Davies Gold Medal. After a keen contest Dr. Davies came out the winner with a score of 140 for eighteen-holes. One of the golfers Mr Ll B Price, met with an accident while getting over a hedge, dislocating his arm, but the doctor immediately placed the limb in its normal position and all went merrily again."

The later club was established in 1905.

The annual meeting of the Peterwell Golf Club was held in the College School on Tuesday 10 May 1910, Dr. Walker in the chair. The balance sheet showed a considerable balance in hand. The following officers were elected; Captain, J S Jones; hon. secretary - A R T Jones, Oak Lodge; hon. treasurer, S S M Baldwin; committee - Dr, Walker, Dr. E Evans, A Thompson, H A Pugh, A Roberts.

In 1914 there was no entry fee. Subs for gents were £1/1/0 and ladies 10/6d for 4 day membership, 21/- for six day. Visitors’ fees were 1/6d a day and 12/6d a month. Sunday play was not allowed at this time.
S J Ireland was appointed professional at Peterwell in 1920 and quickly set a new course record of 64 (he already held the record of 69); Out – 3,4,3,3,3,5,3,3,4 = 31, Home – 4,4,4,3,4,4,3,3,4 = 33 - total 64. Ireland originally from Ilfracombe, spent his formative years under the guidance of W G Groves the well respected Ilfracombe professional.

In 1940 the 9-hole course had a SSS of 63. Club membership was 120. Visitors’ fees were 2/- a day, 7/6d a week and 15/- a month.
From 1947 to 1951 membership had decreased to 65.
From the mid 1950s to 1964 visitors’ fees were 3/- a day and 12/6d a week. Sunday play was allowed.
In the mid 1970s the secretary was Len B Evans. The club had a membership of 180 at this time. The amateur course record was held by Len B Evans with a score of 62. Visitors’ fees were 55p a round, £1.65 a week and £3.85 a month.

Peterwell Golf Club disappeared later in the 1970s. Cilgwyn is the current club.
