Stansted Mountfitchet Golf Club, Essex. (1902 - WW1)

The club was founded in 1902.

The Stansted club had a 9-hole course that opened in early 1903.

The course was laid out near Castle Hills by W Aveston from Cromer. The railway station was 200 yards from the course.

In the 1905 Nisbet’s Golf Yearbook it was listed as Stansted Golf Club. The secretary was C Gold, The Cottage, Stansted, and the captain, Sir T Jackson, Bart. Membership at this time was 150. Entrance fee was £1/1s and subs £3/3s – ladies £2/2s. Visitors’ fees were 2/6 a day and 10/- a week.

Above is a view from the Stansted course in the 1900s (showing the clubhouse?).

The professionals were G Harvey to 1906 and F Woodcock in 1908/9.

There was a two storey clubhouse and there were great hopes for the clubs future. Unfortunately these hopes never materialised and the club closed prior to WW1.

The Google Map below pinpoints The Thatch. In a 1914 newspaper report The Thatch was stated to be “at the top of the Stansted Golf Links”.
