Ryton Workmen's Golf Club, Ryton Willows Course. (1891 - 1911)

The Ryton Workmen's club began playing alongside the Tyneside Golf Club on the Ryton Willows course in the 1890s. 

Tyneside Golf Club moved to their present course in 1903 (see separate entry on this website for the early history of Tyneside Golf Club). The Ryton Workmen's Golf Club continued to play on the Ryton Willows course until 1911.

Result of a competition played by the Workmen's club in May 1901; R Ramsay, 82-1-81; J Boustead, 86-3-83; J Stephenson, 90-6-84; James Robson, 91-6-85; Jno Wilkinson, 89-3-86; J Best, 100-13-87; W Little, 107-20-87; H Brunton, 106-16-90; Ben Grice, 106-14-92; Thomas Barthorpe, 99-7-92. The Bourn Challenge Cup was to be played at a later date.

From the 1905 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook; Ryton Workmen's Golf Club; Instituted 1901; Membership 53; Station at Ryton adjoins; Hon. Secretary - W Little, 5 West Terrace, Ryton-on-Tyne; Captain, J Boustead; Entrance Fee 1 shilling and Subs 5 shillings; 9-holes; Green-keeper, A Harbottle; Professional record - R Collins, 35 (nine-holes); Amateur record - H L Yielder, 35 (nine-holes); Visitors, 1s a day, 2s/6d a week. The course consists of nine-holes the longest of which is about 500 yards. The turf throughout is of a soft, velvety nature, and, with the exception of one or two places, is short, and the soil being of a sandy nature, water never stands on it for any length of time.
