Lanchester Golf Club, County Durham. (1920s)
Short lived club and nine-hole course that appeared in the mid-1920s.
From the Blaydon Courier Saturday 31 January 1925 – “Lanchester Golf Club – A golf club has been formed at Lanchester, suitable ground for a nine-hole course having been obtained near the village. Full particulars as to membership can be obtained from the hon. sec., Mr J G Scott, West View, Lanchester.”
From the Blaydon Courier Saturday 3 October 1925 – “The Lanchester Golf Club held a successful dance in the Memorial Hall on Monday evening last.”
From the Blaydon Courier Saturday 30 January 1926 – “Lanchester Golf Club – The first annual meeting of the Lanchester Golf Club was held in the Memorial Hall Lanchester, on Monday evening. Mr J Waller presided over a fair attendance. The reports of the hon. secretary and hon. treasurer were duly presented and passed as satisfactory. The club’s subscriptions for 1926 are as follows; Gents, £1/11s/6d; Ladies, £1/1s; Junior members; Boys, 15s and girls, 10s, these being reduced from 1925 and the entrance fee being dispensed with. Those desirous of becoming members and living outside a two miles radius of Lanchester may become members upon on payment of the following subscriptions; Gents, 17s/6d; Ladies, 12s/6d. The course is open for play on Sundays. Mr J G Scott, Durham Road, will be pleased to receive enquiries from anyone interested in the club and desirous of becoming members.”
From the Blaydon Courier Saturday 13 February 1926 – Lanchester Golf Club – Whist Drive and Dance- The Lanchester Golf Club held a successful whist drive and dance in the Memorial Hall, Lanchester, and a most enjoyable evening was spent by all. The prizes for whist which were gracefully presented by Miss Sadler were won by the following ladies and gentlemen; Miss H Dawson, Mrs K Wilkinson, Mrs Griffith, Mr W Hunter, Mr M Curry and Mr E Hall. The President Col. H Sadler, Woodlands, replied to the vote of thanks to Miss Sadler and in a very happy speech extolled the virtues of golf and welcomed those present.
Dancing carried on until 2 a.m. to music played by the Alpha Orchestra who delighted all by the rendering of the latest music. The catering was in the capable hands of the ladies of the club and the M.C.’s for whist were; G Cumming and J G Scott and for dancing, S Addison, H R Brydon and G Cumming. The hon. sec., J G Scott carried out the secretarial duties. Col. Sadler has presented a handsome silver cup and replica to the club for competition among the members, and has signified hid intention of entertaining the members on “President’s Day” the date of which is to be fixed later.”
