Standish Park Golf Club, Wigan. (1930 - WW2)

First appeared in 1930 when the secretary was George Haydock, “Wyngarth” Mesnes Road, Wigan and the green-keeper H Meadows. 9-holes with a membership of 160. Visitors’ fees were 2/- a day, 2/6 on Sunday. The station at Wigan was 4 miles away. Local hotels were the Victoria, Grand and Cherry Gardens.

In 1933 and 1935 the secretary was R Norman Marsden, “The Bungalow” Standish Hall, Wigan and the green-keeper J Burns. Membership had risen to about 250. Amateur course record S C Abbott 70.

In June 1934 J H Barker, president and the oldest member of the club, holed in one at the 120 yard first hole.

In 1940 the secretary was R Norman Marsden, “Lyndhurst”, Gidlow Avenue, Wigan and the green-keeper J Burns. 9-holes with a SSS of 70 and a membership of 200. Amateur course record J H Dunn 66.

During the war Standish Park Golf Club closed down and the course was used for open cast mining.

The curiously named Club House Farm is the only feature I found on Standish Park in 1930, this may give some clue to the location of the course.
