West Chiltington Golf Club, Pulborough. (1988 - 2016)

The club was founded in 1988.

The 18-hole undulating parkland course was designed and laid out by Max Faulkner and Brian Barnes.

A beautiful course set in the rolling Sussex countryside with stunning views across the South Downs. The front nine was a true test with its dramatic gradients, the back nine was much flatter. There was also a 9-hole par 3 course.

The following message appeared on the club Facebook page on 2 February 2016.

"It is with great sadness that we have to announce the Closure of West Chiltington Golf Club.

A combination of rural location, extreme weather patterns, rising costs and the down turn in the golf market have all resulted in it no longer being financially viable to continue. As a result we have decided to stop our activities and have now agreed a takeover of the land and buildings by neighbouring Nyetimber Vineyard. As a consequence of this sale, West Chiltington Golf club will cease trading with immediate effect.

We realise it will be a shock to most people and we want you to know that it was an incredibly difficult decision to make and one that was not taken lightly and took a long time to come to. We would like to thank all our members, staff and friends of the course for their support over the last 6 years and thank you for making our time here so special - we will miss you very much and hope to keep in touch."

The club offered this very innovative dog friendly membership section - "We encourage all well behaved dogs here at West Chiltington Golf Club, and for £20 per year your dog can have a membership all of its own right and take advantage of the following benefits. Please note "Dog Membership" is only available to dog owners who are currently members of West Chiltington Golf Club.

Membership included full access to 18 & 9 hole courses and outdoor club grounds; West Chiltington GC  dog collar; Use of dog member terrace bowls; ‘Clean up’ bags available on request from the bar; Cheeky treat available on request from the bar."

In the early 1990s the secretary was S E Coulson and the professional B W Barnes. The 18 holes measured 5,969 yards with a SSS of 69. Green fees were £15 weekday and £20 at weekend.

In 1998 the professional was Clay Morris. The 18- hole course measured 5,877 yards with a SSS of 69. In 2004 the professional was Geoffrey Cotton.

In 2006 the secretary was D Haines, and the professional Lorraine Cousins. The club membership was 500. The 18-hole course measured 5,969 yards with a par of 70 and SSS of 68. Green fees were £18.

The professional at West Chiltington in 2015 was Johnathan Groves.
