Ardara Golf Club, County Donegal. (1899 - WW1)

The club first appeared in 1899.

The following report is from the Derry Journal Friday 7 April 1899. "A most successful meeting was held in the Nesbitt Arms, Ardara, on Tuesday last to institute a golf club for the district. There was a representative attendance, who entered heartily into the project. The ground, which was laid out by Mr George L Baillie, of Belfast, lies about twenty minutes walk from the town, on the sandfields, which are admirably adapted for the game, the turf being soft and crisp and interspersed with numerous bunkers. A burn meandering through the course has to be crossed several times and affords capital sport. Special arrangements have been made for visitors, who, for a small charge, will be allowed to use the links, and no doubt many golfers in the coming season will avail themselves of the privilege. At Tuesday's meeting General Tredenick of Ardara was elected president; captain - Colonel W Hamilton, Mossville; treasurer -  W H Aderson, Manager, Ulster Bank, Glenties; secretary - Michael McNelis, The Hotel, Ardara."

From the 1905 Nisbet's Golf Yearbook; Ardara Golf Club; Number of members 28; Hon. secretary - M McNelis, Green House, Ardara, Co. Donegal; Captain, A M Hamilton J.P.; Conveyances to the golf course can be hired at moderate terms from the Nesbitt Arms Hotel, Ardara.

In1905/6 the secretary was Michael McNelis, Ardara, County Donegal. A 9-hole course. The Captain was A M Hamilton Mossville. Visitors’ fees were 1/- a day, 5/- a week and 10/- a month. The station at Glenties was about 8 miles away.

In 1914 the secretary was still M McNelis now of Green House, Ardara, County Donegal. Membership at this time was 22.  Entrance fee was 10/6 and subs 5/-. The club had a six month season. Visitors’ fees were 1/- a day and Sunday play was allowed with caddies. The Nesbitt Arms was the local hotel, they also offered conveyance to and from the course at moderate terms.

There were three clubs recorded in the Ardara area pre WW1. They were Sandfields, Castlegoland, and Loughside Golf Club near Ardara, this could refer to the one above, but I would appreciate confirmation if anyone knows.

Ardara Golf Club disappeared after WW1.
