Limerick County Golf and Country Club, Ballyneety Co.Limerick. (1993 - 2011)

Limerick County Golf Club was constructed in 1993 and opened in 1994.

It was situated in the village of Ballyneety, 30kms south from Shannon Airport.

An 18-hole parkland Championship golf course with 18 sand-based greens and tees all laid to USPGA specification. The course was designed by Irish Ryder Cup player Des Smyth and Irish Amateur International Declan Brannigan. It underwent a multimillion renovation in 2004 overseen by Declan Brannigan . The secretary/manager was Gerry McKeon, professional Donal McSweeney and greenkeeper Mark Sheridan., The course measured 5,876 meters (6,426 yards) from the championship tees. There were three par fives and three par threes, all over 170 yards, six par fours all in excess of 400 yards, with water featuring on six holes on the back nine. After three good opening holes a dramatic climb at the par-5 fourth hole quickly took you to the highest part of the course, at this point there were stunning views in all directions over Limerick County. The par 4 5th hole was plunged downhill, and the hill needed to be climbed and descended once more, before returning to the clubhouse at the ninth. After all that spectacular front-nine scenery and elevation change, the back-nine was laid out on much flatter terrain, and there was a reasonable chance of retrieving your round.

There was a circular shaped clubhouse which included Croker’s Bistro, the Ballyneety Bar and there were 12 luxury holiday cottages on site.

Unfortunately the members probably suspected things were going wrong when in 2010 the club lost its affiliation with the Golfing Union of Ireland because of unpaid subscriptions.

In 2011 the company behind Limerick County Golf and Country Club was wound-up and a liquidator appointed, with the company more than €2.5 million in debt. The company officially ceased trading on January 15, 2011, but had been in difficulty for some time.

Eight staff became redundant when the company ceased trading in January 2011, and the members were left without a club and course.

It was reported in July 2013 that the former Limerick County Golf Club course was back under the new name of Ballyneety Golf Club.
