Lismore Golf Club, County Waterford. (1892 – WW2)

There is no entry for Lismore Golf Club in The Golfing Annual 1888/89.

The report below from May 1892 is the earliest found for Lismore Golf Club. It was a return match played at Fermoy against the Officers of The First Seaforth Highlanders. We are still searching for a report on the first match which was, presumably, played at Lismore.

The following is from the Sportsmans Holiday Guide 1897. “The Lismore Golf Club have their course about half a mile out of town on very high ground, overlooking the valley of the Blackwater and commanding fine views of surrounding country. The number of holes is eight, the distance around is about one mile and the holes average a little over 200 yards in length.”

Following is a short entry from the Golfing Annual 1898/99. “The course is a small one of nine-holes.”

There is no entry for Lismore Golf Club in the Nisbet’s Golf Yearbook 1905.

In the 1908 Nisbet’s the secretary was Sir Richard Musgrave. It also says that “the club is presently in abeyance but it is hoped to reopen this year.”

The Irish Golfers Guide 1910 stated the club was “believed to be extinct.”

The Irish Field in 1921 reported “It is good to hear that the Lismore Golf Club has again reopened after closing for five years.”

The following is from the Golfer’s Handbooks in 1923 and 1933; Lismore Golf Club; Membership of 52; Secretary – F C Guest, L.P.S.I., Main Street, Lismore; Green-keeper, J Herlihy; Nine-holes; Station at Lismore one mile; Visitors, 2s a day, 7s/6d a week, 15s a month. Sunday play allowed.

The following is from the 1947 Golfer’s Handbook; Secretary was M F Mason, Fernville, Lismore; The club had a membership of 50;  Green-keeper, C O’Brien; Amateur course record A B Harrington, 72; The nine-hole course had a Par and SSS of 72; The local Hotel was the Devonshire Arms.

The club continued to be listed in the Golfer’s Handbook during the 1950s but it was a repetitive entry. It’s likely that the club closed at the time of WW2.

If anyone can help with the location of the earlier golf course please get in touch via the “Contact Us” facility on the website homepage.

The current Lismore Golf Club was founded in 1965.
