Merrylea/Langside Golf Club, Glasgow. (1890s)
It was reported in October 1894 that Willie Fernie, the Troon professional, had laid out a new nine-hole course on two fields at Langside. The total length of the course was 2,200 yards the longest hole was 300 yards and the shortest “an iron shot.”
It was also stated that the “turf was of a texture that would lend itself to the making of a good course”

From the Field Saturday 8 December 1894 - "New Course For Glasgow - A nine-hole course has been laid out in two fields on the farm of Merrylea between Cathcart and Pollokshaws, and within a short distance of Langside station. The hazards are hedges, some of them very difficult of negotiation. The ground has been leased by the Merrylea Golf Club, who have already a membership of over 100, the limit being 200. A small clubhouse has been erected at the farm steading."
Glasgow Herald Wednesday 28 July 1897 - "Cathcart Burglary - It is reported that the pavilion of the Merrylea Golf Club has been broken into. An entrance was effected by smashing the bar window about 20 shillings in money, a dozen bottles of beer and other liquor, and a number of golf balls were stolen."
The club became Cathcart Castle Golf Club when a nine-hole course was laid out at Castle Mains in 1899.
