Westtown Golf Club, Coalburn, South Lanarkshire. (Pre-WW1)

Thanks to Alfie and Harry Ward for their help on defunct Clydesdale golf clubs and courses. They supplied the following history of the Westtoun (Westtown) Golf Club.

Westtoun Golf Club, Coalburn (near Lesmahagow) opened 28th July 1912.  We found traces of official club activity up to 1915 when we lost all contact with any reports etc?? Nine-holes were located between Wallace’s Cave and the Poniel burn. (the path of the burn was re-routed in later years due to works at the open cast mine nearby)

The course was situated about one mile from Coalburn village and was mainly accessed by way of the old Moor road which in itself, cut through and bisected the actual layout of the course en route for the old Douglas road.

No yardage’s are known relating to the nine-holes on the course. Very little known about club and course although it is possible that play continued on the course throughout and post WW1.

During the 1930's a small four hole course was set up by some of the local golfing enthusiasts and was apparently well played over, especially during the long summer evenings. Word of mouth account only!

From the Hamilton Advertiser Saturday 28 March 1914 - "The Second Annual General Meeting of the West-town Golf Club will be held in the Shepherd's Hall, Coalburn, on Monday 30 March, at eight p.m. Intending members are cordially invited".

The Google Map below pinpoints the location of the course.
