Thankerton Golf Club, South Lanarkshire. (1905 - WW2)

The club was founded in 1905.

The nine-hole course on the banks of  the River Clyde was laid out by L A Morrison, Biggar and Mr Stewart of Paisley.

The course was officially opened on 10 June 1905 by Lady Anstruther of Charmicahel.

The following report is from the Edinburgh Evening News Monday 12 June 1905; “Opening of Thankerton Course – The new course at Thankerton was opened on Saturday in the presence of a large company. Captain Thomson Carmichael having declared the course open, Lady Anstruther was presented with a silver-mounted club, and she thereafter drove off the first ball. The course extends to nine-holes and is beautifully situated on the banks of the Clyde, within ten minutes’ walk of Thankerton village.”

Leading scores from the Carmichael Challenge Cup played in August 1913; William Dickson, 76; James Linn jnr, 82; Jas Forrest, 82.

In 1913/4 the secretary was J Forrest and the professional P Marshall (1910-1914.) A 9-hole course on old turf with a gravel subsoil, it was situated on the banks of the Clyde close to the foot of Tinto, the highest hill in Lanarkshire. There was a membership of 70 and an entry fee of £1/1/0. Subs for gents were 8/6d and ladies 5/-. The club season at this time was from March to December.  Visitors’ fees for gents were 5/6d a month, ladies 2/6d. Sunday play was not allowed. The railway station at Thankerton was ½ mile away.

The “Tintock Tap” Cup was also played In September 1914, result; James Forrest (9) 72; Craig Millar (18) 77; Robert Jackson (14) 80.

Leading players in a ladies' competition played in July 1915; first, Miss A M Sharnocks; second, Miss Johnston; third, Miss Warnock.

Parts of the course were required for the growing of crops during WW1. The course re-opened following the war albeit with only seven holes for a time. 

In 1923 the joint secretaries were W W Robbie, Schoolhouse, Covington, Thankerton and J Lithgow, Boat Cottage, Thankerton, and the greenkeeper A Henderson. Membership was now 94. Course records: (a) Geo Logan, 35; (p) D Adam, 37. Visitors’ fees for gents were 1/6d a day, 5/- a week, 10/- a month. Ladies 1/-, 3/-, 6/- respectively. Sunday play was not allowed.

From 1930 to the club’s last year in 1947, the secretary was D Dargie, Aldersyde, Thankerton, and the green-keeper J Veitch. Membership was about 75 during this period.
