Spa Golf Club, Province of Liège. (1883 - 1930)

The first golf course was laid out inside a horseracing track in 1883 at Sauvenière, which today is the side of the airfield. This course did not see much success and was quickly abandoned as it was too far away from the city.

On August 26th 1909, a new golf course was inaugurated for the “Royal Spa Golf Club”, which received its royal patronage in 1908, at Sart. The 9-hole course was exactly located where we find today’s second nine holes of Royal Golf du Fagnes. According to the amateurs of the time, the ground was well arranged, the holes varied from each other even though the course had the reputation to be a little short.

After the First World War the City of Spa bought a plot of 67 hectares at Malchamps with the idea to build two beautiful 18-hole courses. A 9-hole course was opened in 1920 and it proved that this common ground was not well suited for golf, even though the landscape was superb.

Finally, in 1927 some local Businessmen in the area felt that Spa needs an outstanding golf course. The Golf Club de Fagnes was founded and Tom Simpson was then commissioned to draw a golf course at Balmoral. The course with two nine-hole loops around the Club House with magnificent views of the Ardennes was officially opened on July 2nd 1930. In 1955 the club received the Royal patronage and is since then known as Royal Golf Club de Fagnes.
