Schloss Fuschl Golf and Country Club, Lake Fuschl. (1965 – 2023)

Set amid a picturesque landscape between the shimmering shores of the deep-blue Lake Fuschl and the enchanting hunting lodge of Schloss Fuschl, the renowned Golf & Country Club Schloss Fuschl was established in 1965, initially as a par three course and later developed into an executive course. According to legend, the beauty of this setting captivated a wide range of prominent figures over the centuries, including Emperor Maximilian I, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Reich Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop — himself a golfer — and Roger Moore.

Founded in 1965, the course was among the oldest and most traditional golf courses in Austria, offering players an exceptional golfing experience accompanied by breathtaking views of the turquoise lake.

Designed by Bernhard von Limburger and constructed by the course builder Peters, the course was officially opened on 22 and 23 May 1965 by the renowned Tibetologist and then President of the Austrian Golf Federation, Dr Heinrich Harrer.

Originally measuring 1,380 metres, the course underwent an extensive redesign a few years before its 50th anniversary in 2019. As part of this renovation, four holes were extended to par fours. As at the time of the original opening, nine holes had to be played descending steadily towards the lakeshore. From 2019 onwards, players were then collected there by a shuttle bus and transported back up the hill to the first tee.

However, by the end of the 2023 season the final tee shots were struck at Lake Fuschl. In 2024 the golf course underwent a comprehensive renaturalisation, and the land has since been repurposed as a sports and recreational area for both hotel guests and visitors seeking leisure and relaxation, as reported by the Salzburger Nachrichten. The reason given for the closure was that the cost and maintenance of the course were no longer in reasonable proportion to its usage and occupancy. As a result, the lease was not renewed and expired on 31 December 2023.
