Donnafugata Resort, Sicily (2003 – 2019)

This resort featured two 18-hole courses, both of which opened in 2010. One of them, the Parkland Course, was designed by Gary Player and described by Elisabetta Bertini on expertgolf.com as follows:

“A Gary Player signature design for this golf course, just tells you have fun and difficult the course is going to be. The holes are really wide with many olive trees as "obstacles" but there are not many bunkers in the fairways. The really tricky part are the greens as they are hidden behind bunkers that are really deep. I loved going to visit the necropolis from the sixth hole. Lovely finish towards the clubhouse. Needless to say, the facility is amazing as it is a one-of-a-kind resort. Little expensive but worth it. “

The second course, known as the Links or South Course, was described by Timo on expertgolf.com (translated from German):

“Designed by Italian architect Franco Piras, the South Course is modelled on British links courses – even though the sea can only be seen from a distance. Huge greens and undulating fairways characterise the par-72 layout. The name is somewhat misleading. The South Course is not a classic links course, but rather eighteen holes laid out in the style of a British links course. This means undulating fairways, large greens, and almost exclusively natural obstacles such as dense dune grass, but no trees. However, the main feature is missing: the sea. Although you can glimpse a strip of blue on the seventh and twelfth holes, the course lies around ten kilometres from the beaches of southern Sicily. Piras has also integrated two spacious artificial lakes into the course – something you would not find on a genuine links course either. Nor would you expect to find a single, truly mighty pine tree, which stands on the ninth hole and provides plenty of shade.”

Sadly, Sicily’s premier golf resort remains closed, with no indication that it will reopen in the near future.
