Marcevol Golf Club, Pyrénées-Orientales (66).

The first four-holes of the golf course were completed in July 1997, and the club was inaugurated in December 1999.

It was eventually extended to nine-holes measuring 2,169m/2,372yards with a par of 34, green fees were 20euros. The course was laid out amongst vineyards with an ancient priory nearby. The course manager was Thierry Gaurenne and the professional Jean-Christophe Orosz.

It was reported in April 2002 that the owners of the golf course were in negotiations with British Investors to sell the course. The new owners intended to extend the course to eighteen- holes and construct top grade hotel complex nearby. These plans had not been finalised.

In March 2004 a company from Scotland put forward their proposals for the eighteen-hole course and resort which was met with much opposition, particularly by residents of Marcevol. In August 2004 the course closed due to ongoing water shortage problems.

In March 2007 building permission for the development was refused, but the Scottish owners still intended to continue seeking permission for the golf resort.

In September 2011 it was reported that the planned golf resort continued to meet opposition from an Association set up to protect rural life and the priory site. The owners of the land on which the course stood were from the UK, and although the course was reported to be abandoned, there were still plans to create a tourist holiday village and 18-hole golf course. The Association said they were determined to prevent the development if permission had not already been granted.

In January 2014 a petition was set up and sent to the Prefecture, Council and Maire, opposing the development. The proposed golf village included restaurants, swimming pool, fitness centre, well being centre, boutiques, luxury 4 star hotel with 24 bedrooms on 3 levels, a clubhouse, 54 x 85m2 apartments, 20 x 105m2 apartments, 7 rooms for staff, and 177 parking spaces.

In February 2015 The Association for the protection of the site celebrated 10 years existence “and still no golf or real estate in view on the plateau...”
