Tregaron Golf Club, Ceredigion. (1910 - WW2)

It was reported in February 1910 that Mr John Rowlands, secretary to Mr Lloyd George, had written to Mr Charles Le Brun Powell, Brynygog, saying he was delighted to see in the papers that Mr Powell had proposed starting a golf club at Tregaron which he was sure would be a great advantage to the town. He stated that “The air on the Castell is most bracing and the scenery magnificent”. There was every confidence that the links would prove attractive to visitors and improve the status of the town. Mr Rowlands added that he had never played golf, but friends in Cardiff and London did, and he would certainly do all he could to help them to establish a good reputation for Tregaron golf links.

In early March 1910 it was reported that the progress of the club had been exceptional. The founder of the club Mr C W Le Brun Powell, Brynygog, on whose estate the course was situated, was praised for the organisation in the preparation of the links. The course had already been extended to 18-holes, the area covering over 2 miles. Expert golfers had expressed the opinion that “the course greatly surpasses that of neighbouring clubs and playing on it is becoming more and more popular every day”.

The following officials had been elected; President, Captain CW Le Brun Powell; Vice Presidents Mrs Evans, Nythfa, Messrs T Jones, Post Office, J Rowland, Treasury Officer, and G T Lewis, MA; Treasurer, Mr S M Powell MA; Secretary Mr H P Evans, Nythfa. Other committee members were; Messrs S Jones, Brynteifi, and J Evans, Excise Office. The professional at the club was a Mr Morris.

Only March, and after such a short time the prospects looked bright, more improvements had been made to the course and a formal opening date was fixed for Whit Monday. A competition had already been played, the winner receiving a silver medal, result as follows; W J Webb, 95-13-82; J T Evans, 106-20-86; T P Timothy, 121-30-91; I C Chapman, 128-30-98; David James, 123-20-103.
