Carmarthen Golf Club. (1907 – 1928)

Founded in 1907.

The club led a nomadic life in the first 20 years of its existence. It finally settled at the current location on Foel Hill in 1928.

Extract from a report that appeared in the South Wales Daily News Saturday 27 April 1907 – “A golf club was formed at Carmarthen last night, its promoters meeting at the Boar’s Head Hotel. Mr D E Stephens, solicitor, who presided, reported that he had seen the Mayor (Mr G N Williams) to draft an agreement, some small details of which had to be settled. His Worship met them in a sportsmanlike and liberal way, he being prepared to grant a lease of four fields at Penlan for five years, free of rent for the first year. The club is to enclose and fence-in nine greens and erect a clubhouse and the necessary stiles. The committee seemed to think a green of 30 feet square would suit for immediate purpose. In the proposed course the longest hole would be 450 yards and the shortest 120 yards. The club is to be styled the Carmarthen Golf Club. The president appointed was R M Driver, of Woking; D E Stephens, captain; E S Allen, M.A., vice-captain; Walter Rees, secretary; C E Davies, treasurer; committee – Arthur Llewellyn Davies, C Haydn Williams, W J Williams, Dr. Barry and R A Lewis. It was resolved that the subscription for gentlemen should be one guinea and half a guinea for ladies, the entrance fee to be 10shillings, which is not to be enforced until the committee thinks fit, not until after the first year. It is hoped that the ground will be ready for use in October. The committee will begin to enclose the grounds in about a month.”
