Trefriw and Llanrwst Golf Club, Conwy. (1897 - 1960s)

Founded in 1897.

The professionals were William Buckle in 1897/8, Ben Owen 1901 to 1905 and P McLeod 1905 to 1907.

In May 1898 the Trefriw Golf Club was elected a constituent club of the Welsh Golfing Union.

During August 1898 Mr H H Hilton took on professionals Alec Herd and Ben Sayers in an open competition at Trefriw. In the scratch competition Hilton scored 68, Sayers 68 and Herd 70. The amateur played sensational golf and his score included “two strokes in a rabbit-scrape”  and a six at the last hole, which he “overdrove”.

In the early 1900s the secretary at the Trefriw and Llanrwst Golf Club was John Blackwell, “Hendre” Llanrwst.

Result of the monthly medal for June 1909; A B Boyd, 99-28-71; C Cooper Morris, 86-14-72; W McGaul, 102-30-72; W N Smith, 87-10-77; Herbert Hughes, 109-30-79; E Clutterbuck, 89-9-80; W F Barry, 104-20-84.

Above is a pre-WW1 Photochrom Post Card, No. J 417421 of Trefriw, Golf Links from S.W.

In 1914 the secretary at the Trefriw Golf Club, Denbighshire, was C C Morris, Rose Hill, Trefriw.

As can be seen below the course continued to be shown on Ordnance Survey Maps until the 1960s. It's possible, as with many clubs, that the club ceased to exist at the time of WW2.

I would appreciate help from anyone who can remember the club in the later years. Please "contact us" via the website homepage.
